Toyota Sudden Acceleration Cases

Not all car accidents are caused by the reckless or negligent behavior of another driver. Sometimes they are caused by dangerous and defective equipment that leave the driver unable to control the vehicle, endangering himself and other drivers on the road. Most recently, Toyota vehicles have been recalled due to serious injuries and deaths caused by sudden acceleration. It's unclear whether the problem is a sticking accelerator pedal a floor mat entrapment of the accelerator or a problem with the car's computer.

When you are seriously injured due to dangerous and defective equipment, you should not have to worry about your medical bills. Nor should you have to worry about your ability to earn a living or the additional burden on your family finances. The legal staff of the Frank Jenkins Law Office has represented many Kentuckians injured in car accidents, and we aren't afraid to take on corporations and their insurance companies to get you the compensation you deserve. At the urging of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Toyota recently halted the sale and production of eight Toyota model cars while they identified and corrected an accelerator problem that has resulted in 2,262 incidents of apparent unintended acceleration. The defective acceleration was reported as the cause of 815 crashes, 341 cases of injury and 19 deaths, according to a Safety Research and Strategies report.

Toyota announced that the models affected by the accelerator pedal recall are the 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, as well as certain 2007-2010 Camry, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra and 2008-2010 Sequoia models.

Vehicles involved in the floor mat recall include: 2005-2010 Avalon, 2007-2010 Camry, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2009-2010 VENZA.

If you experience sudden acceleration due to a defective gas pedal in a Toyota, or any other vehicle, take the following steps to avoid a collision:

  • Using both feet, use firm yet steady pressure to depress the brake pedal. Do not pump the brake pedal.
  • Shift the transmission into Neutral (N) position, and continue depressing the brakes while you pull off the road
  • Turn off the engine.
  • Contact your Toyota dealer.

Toyota has determined that the shape of the accelerator pedal will need to be reconfigured to address the risk of floor mat entrapment. Toyota encourages owners of vehicles covered by the floor mat recall to remove any driver's floor mats and not replace them until they receive the Toyota issued correction.
